This has been by far the most challenging few weeks in my fan-fessional life. I understood cognitively that I was facing a crossroads in my evolution as a fan and as a man, and that it came with exceptionally difficult choices. What I didn’t truly understand, however, was the range of emotions I would feel during this process.
The primary mandate I had for myself in making this decision was to have it based on the potential for my growth as a fan — as that has always steered me in the right direction. But I am also at a point in my life where it is of equal importance to find an opportunity that encourages my evolution as a man: moving my fandom out of my comfort zone to a new city and community which offers the greatest potential for my fandom and personal growth. With this in mind, I have decided that I am going to support MANCHESTER CITY F.C. in the ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE.
I’ve chosen to become a Cityzen for a variety of reasons. For starters, Manchester City is beginning a new era under a very impressive coach in Pep Guardiola. This new era in football will allow me to jump into the fray with a clean slate of fandom, as well as a basic level of understanding. Manchester City is also not the most popular football club in the Premier League, football, or even the city of Manchester for that matter.
While also not as popular, City’s history is also not as prestigious as its crosstown neighbors. There’s an underdog vibe to that which personally appeals to me. This means I’m no frontrunner. Lastly, this may sound silly, but I love City’s color scheme. That shade of sky blue next to black or white looks beautiful, and it’s aesthetically pleasing to me. It’s a color I would proudly wear once the time comes to begin purchasing swag from the club. I can’t wait for that Jamilson #10 to show up. The world is ready for greatness.
It really pains me to know that I will disappoint so many people with this choice, but I believe I am doing what I feel is the right thing at this point in my life and my budding football fanaticism. My goal has been to support a footy club in each of the major leagues, and with this decision, I meet my goal. It must be said that I have my life-changing experience in Paris during the Euro 2016 tournament to thank for my heightened interest in football, whether international or club. I’ve always watched the World Cup (dating back to at least 1998), and I am happy to see that following football will now become a year round experience for me. More sports couldn’t hurt, could it?
In the meantime, I will continue to support Ligue 1’s Olympique Lyonnais, Ligue 2’s Paris F.C., MLS’ New York City F.C. (a major factor in today’s decision–though that may have to change once David Beckham’s attempts at launching a franchise down in Miami are finally successful), NPSL’s Boca Raton F.C., and La Liga’s FC Barcelona. I will forever cherish my interest in each of these organizations, and I look forward to following them all as my understanding of the sport continues to grow with time. Football’s future is bright, and I am happy to be a part of it.
It’s time for me to officially become a Cityzen.
Come on, City. You’re mad.
